New Paltz features some very distinctive antique stone houses that intrigue visitors, history buffs and those longing to return to yesteryear.  Their appeal is practically timeless and when one comes on the market, they are immensly popular and in-demand. 

The Huguenot Street Historic District features several stone houses that remain from the first settlers in New Paltz which settled by the Wallkill River in 1678.  These stone houses have been meticulously preserved by the descendants of these first Huguenot settlers to maintain their character and appeal.  This whole street of New Paltz stone homes has been a designated as a National Historic Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. 

Huguenot Street is not the only place with vintage stone homes in the area.  Several that date back to the 1700s can be found in New Paltz and the surronding area.  Furthermore, Stone Ridge and Hurley feature several Revolutionary War era stone houses that served as accomodations for famous war heroes and are designated National Historic Landmarks. 

Stone houses are popular projects for local craftsman who enjoy bringing these structures back to their original splendor.  Stylishly renovated and restored stone houses are hot commodities and often bring buyers from out of town.  It's not uncommon to see these restored dwellings adorned with antique items and artwork suitable for museums by new owners who appreciate the history and charm of these one-of-a-kind homes.
