New York State allows homeowners with the primary residence in the state to apply for a STAR (School Tax Relief) exemption. The two types are Basic and Enhanced. The Enhanced Exemption is for seniors and Basic is for anyone owning the primary residence and making under $500,000 total income. The exemption is only available on the primary residence.

All homeowners receiving the basic star exemption must register with NYS Tax Department in order to receive the exemption for 2014. Those receiving the enhanced STAR (seniors) need not register.
I just registered on the website- it was quick and easy. I received a notice in the mail with a STAR code, went to the site, entered the code and answered some simple questions. It took me less than 5 minutes.

Deadline is December 31, 2013. Go to www.tax.ny.gov to learn more and to register.
